The SYC offers sailing programs for any age sailor. The Polywog Program, for the youngest sailors, gets kids together and offers a great introduction to boats and the club through fun activities with friends. We also offer junior and adult sailing programs.  For more information about the SYC Sailing Program please call/email Harold Battarbee, Sailing Education Committee (318-676-9553; hbattarbee@comcast.net).

Polywogs
Summer 2011:

SYC Testing the Water

Polywogs are young creatures seen at SYC during summer months.  There have been a lot more of them lately.  They love the water. Most breathe with their heads above water, but not all.  They usually have short arms and legs, and some sort of floatation device attached.  They swim with much fanfare, enthusiasm, and a bewildering variety of swimming strokes.  With training, Polywogs can often be found near the surface of the water, where they breathe air. Polywogs are consumers and will eat almost anything with cheese on it or that is sweet. They are tireless.

The Program is geared towards our youngest members (6 - 8 years old). The session will be an introduction to water sports.  Instruction will be given in basic water safety, and swimming lessons will be offered for those who do not swim well.  In addition, there will be a very basic introduction to the Optimus dinghy (a small sailboat specifically designed for little people), and basic knot tying.  Classes are meant to be a fun, recreational, learning experience.  Much of the material will be introduced using games, arts and crafts.  Lunch will be included.  Classes will be taught by US Sailing-Certified Instructors and trainers. Watch this column for the 2011 schedule and program outline.

If you are interested in the Polywog Program, please contact Harold Battarbee.  If there is enough interest in the program, we will make it happen.  If you have any friends who might be interested, please let me know.  One does not have to be a Club member to participate.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
